BMW has a special place among motorcycle brands and it's not just about premium positioning.
The German brand has its own vision of what a two-wheeled vehicle should look like in terms of design and engineering solutions.
Someone chuckles, calling BMW Motorrad products "motorcycles assembled from car parts" or with skepticism about the boxer engine layout. But even opponents of the Bavarian technology give it its due, not challenging the technical uniqueness and originality.
Boxer engines are more than just a long tradition.
The history of the BMW brand began with them. Its first motorcycle was the R 32, introduced in 1923 and equipped with a 494 cc unit, the cylinders of which were located horizontally.
The motor developed 8.5 hp and allowed to squeeze up to 95 km / h. A passion for speed and motorsport gripped the company almost immediately after its birth.
In 1925, a very young BMW presented the R 37 model with a 500 cc 16 hp engine to the world.
November 28, 1937 Ernest Henne and BMW 500 Kompressor with 500 cc supercharged 108 hp engine, set a speed record of 279.5 km / h. The incredible achievement lasted 14 years!
But let's fast forward to the present and take a look at the wide Bavarian palette, as well as technical solutions that allow us to draw the line between BMW and other motor vehicles.
Particularly noteworthy are the front suspension schemes, for example the Duolever. This scheme is based on the patented design of the British inventor Norman Hossack, which is significantly different from the traditional motorcycle forks.
Basically, it is a wishbone suspension with two diagonal arms and a shock absorber and spring that are responsible for damping - just like in a car suspension. The advantage of Duolever is torsional resistance. Two diagonal levers absorb the forces generated during compression and rebound while maintaining maximum stability.
The Telelever front suspension also features an unusual design, in which the steering and wheel damping occurs independently of each other.
A diagonal arm, connected to the frame at the front, supports the fork and front wheel, while a center spring strut is responsible for damping.
The Telelever has an anti-bite geometry for improved ride comfort.
The F-Series' in-line twin-turbo range has been variable since the debut of the new naked F900R and the F900XR crossover.
At the top of the BMW Motorrad lineup are the giant K1600 tourers in various variations with 1649cc six-cylinder engines.
